Natural rock a happy sight in Woodhaven

Before

Just as the snow melted, I walked my dog past the giant white rock on Whiting Square, only to discover that the hideous white paint had been stripped off.

It had been painted white for a few years, and vandals got a chance at defacing the rock with black spray paint a few weeks ago. Fortunately, someone decided that rather than to paint over the graffiti, stripping the white paint would be a better idea... And it is!
I think it looks great!
Now if only we could get some benches in the adjacent street row island.

Sincerely,

A Happy Woodhaven Resident

Very nice! There is hope after all.

Benches were requested last year. So we hope the city bench program comes through.

That is a beautiful rock from my younger years.

"I'll meet you at the rock" was said many times in my youth.

Benches would have been nice.

I used to love those benches in the late 60's but now they will only bring riff raff. The old people will be frightened away by punks

Keep pestering your Council Member and civic groups. Don't let them get away with "There's not enough money."

Good luck with that. Every time my area has requested benches, you have whiny helicopter moms yelling "OMG Homeless drug users will sleep on them!"

I grew up there right up the street. The benches were removed to help keep the drug dealers and kids from hanging out there and drinking and loitering in the area. Be carefull what you ask for!

That was 20 years ago at the height of NYCs drug epidemic.
Things have changed since then. Citizens have taken back their parks and neighborhoods. Woodhaven is no different.

One stepping stone achieved for Queens but so much more to go! A small victory is still great though.

The Memorial Day Parade used to be centered here during the 50s - 70s. We used to sit on the mall and watch. I remember big crowds then.

That rock was a lot bigger when I was 8!

That's the rock I remember from my childhood in the 60-70s.. It looks great in its natural state.

This damn Graffiti is out of control in Woodhaven. I wish I can catch one of them and break their fingers one by one.

"The Rock" at the Whiting Square..it looks beautiful in its natural state. My brother and I would pass it everyday as our Beloved Mother walked us to St. Elizabeth School. We lived on 90th Ave and seeing the picture brought back such beautiful memories of our younger years back in the 50's. Thanks for the posting...

At least some monuments remain. A great memory from my youth that I walked past almost every day from st Elizabeth's.

The ROCK was used for Veteran memorial services, and as kids we would scramble to retrieve the spent brass a following the rifle volley.

We lived on the corner of 90th and 91st, downstairs from 1942-49
