Augustana Lutheran Church being transformed

The Augustana Lutheran Church on Ditmars Blvd at Hazen Street got a permit for a new roof. This is what the building looks like now.

Unbelievable! Cheating the DOB and our laws here in NYC, who do they think they are. They don't pertain to following laws, I guess. While hardworking respected people go by the right way to build, alter or get permits these rats keep on trying to get one over on us and they make a fortune. We have to struggle and do these the lawful way. Take away their business, liscene or whatever else and fine and ban them!

This is the church, it once had a steeple...

It now looks like one of those art/tech collective warehouses. Maybe they'll put a hot tub or a pool on the roof.

Site Fill: Not Applicable??!!

What's the point in turning a lovely building into a square, flat-roofed structure?

What a shame, this was a great modern building.

Look at most of the houses in the neighborhood. This is not true at all. Most people back in the day when Queens was ignored did not get permits to build giant sections onto the back of their houses.

How do you know how hardworking people are anyway?

The city will probably build a homeless shelter there. Remember, everyone has to do their share to help the homeless.

This will never be rebuilt into a church again. The money is not there and never was.
Do I have to be the first one to say this looks like a total scam? Make the building and location into a disgusting mess. Then somewhere down the line it is sold for development. Follow the money. Some Bukarians or Chinese should buy this and build to the limits allowed. Then pave or asphalt over all green grass that is left and use as parking for outlandish SUVs.

Man. It's obvious this roofer doesn't know what he's doing!
If he did that to my roof I'd sue him so fast his head would spin.
On second thought, he's no roofer. He's a roof rat.
I wonder how much cheese he had to give to the guy in the DOB to alter the roof? Hmmm.

What is the FULL story here? Is this property still owned by the church?
Are we to believe that an ACTIVE congregation would agree to this destruction?
As someone else commented, this building was purposely destroyed, and the fact that it reached this stage without ANYONE in the neighborhood, their City Council Rep, immediately getting a SWO from the DOB is beyond belief.
This was a beautifully-designed, midcentury-modern style church, now reduced to uninhabitable rubble.
'Roof Replacement'? This is the poster-building for the criminality and corruption which is now the norm in this borough.

This church went out of business in 2015 and merged with Grace Lutheran Church in Astoria.
